​​ARTIST'S PROFILE

​​Deborah Shah-Smith collects unwanted vintage Welsh tweed fabric and clothing because she is drawn to their colours, textures, composition and history. Through Mopani Beans, Deborah hopes to breathe new life into these textiles by up-cycling to create unique handbags & accessories. By doing so, she also hopes to increase ​awareness & appreciation of this wonderful Welsh textile.

Mopani Beans handbags are designed to be simple, practical yet elegant, and often take inspiration from Japanese styles. Deborah enjoys working with natural materials of different texture and a palette of earthy colours.

Every handbag she creates has a unique combination of outer wool tweed with a complementary or contrasting European linen or organic cotton lining. ​Many handbags are finished with a wooden button hand carved in mid-Wales. Some Mopani Beans bags are decorated with hand stitched appliqué imaginary floral designs, ​all worked in pure wool.​
